Research interests
Juhyun Song’s lab is performing researches on the relationship between metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
1. The study on the role of adiponectin both in systemic metabolism and central nervous system
- Adiponectin as one of adipokines from adipocytes has been known to regulate glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and cell viability mechanism. Adiponectin contributes to adipocyte differentiation and fat browning.
- In central nervous system, adiponectin has multiple functions including the improvement of brain insulin resistance, neurite outgrowth, and neuronal cell viability, and the regulation of microglia polarization against neuroinflammation. We investigate whether or not adiponectin is involved in neuroinflammation, synaptic plasticity, long term potentiation, and brain insulin resistance.
- Diabetes induced dementia is considered as the low level of adiponectin in blood. This mouse model showed the impairment of brain insulin resistance, the memory loss. Adiponectin leads to the improvement of cognitive decline in diabetes induced dementia and decreases neuroinflammaiton
2. The study on the role of glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in central nervous system
- GLP-1 as am incretin hormone is linked to the glucose metabolism, and insulin resistance. GLP-1 is secreted from gut L-cells and hindbrain specific neurons.
- In central nervous system, glp-1 contributes to the improvement of neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and neuronal survival mechanism
- We recently found that GLP-1 regulates mitochondrial function in neuron and promtote the stability of neural network and the spine maturation both in high fat diet mouse brain and in primary cultured neurons.
3. The study on the neuronal function and long non coding RNAs in Bile duct ligation model
- Bile duct ligation model reflects the hepatic encephalopathy. We investigated the mechanism of neuronal function in bile duct ligation mouse model.
- We are identifying causative long non coding RNAs responsible for neuronal dysfunction in bile duct ligation brain.
- In in vitro condition, we tried to find the cellular mechanisms on neuronal function related long non coding RNAs in bile duct ligation brain.
