Research interests

 Our lab is ENT based interdisciplinary sleep research lab. We are especially interested in personalized treatment for Sleep related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Our research interests are categorized into 4 subjects

1. Anatomic traits: We established drug induced sleep endoscopy which is able to mimic the airway of sleep and we have developed it into MDS (multimodality DISE system) which can  help to identify the site of collapse in patients through the follow up study. Our team has built a system that can simulate treatment methods such as oral appliance, positional therapy, and CPAP and through this, it can provide not only proper surgical targets, but also targets for sleep technics beyond monolithic UPPP. We published 3 patents and transferred the technology to companies.

2. Physiologic endotypic traits of OSA: For personalized treatment for OSA, our final research goal, it is very important to distinguish pathophysiological phenotypes of it. Thus, we are working with Andrew Wellman’s team in Harvard medical school to develop a simplified method for the identification of OSA endotypic traits for government project.

3. Drug discovery and development for OSA: The most problems with OSA therapy are low compliance and therapeutic effect. To overcome this, we try to find novel strategies for the therapy and develop potential drugs. Recently we received national project and prepared the basis to be able to conduct clinical and non-clinical research on drug therapy for sleep apnea.

4. Identification of molecular mechanism of OSA : Based on various clinical information including molecular biological indicators and samples of OSA patients, our research team exerts ourselves to identify the causes of disease and their molecular mechanisms for cure (at the gene and protein level through biochemical and molecular biological approaches.)
